Chapter 10

I’ve described in the minutest details what I saw and felt in the early part of that Sunday evening. But you’ll have to forgive me if I step back a level as I describe what happened next. If I described it in the same microscopic detail I think I might run out of both ink and the will to live.

Not to mention such a level of description probably being too much for my heart and cardiac system, the very thing that had put my wife and me in this position. Me downstairs and alone, her upstairs in bed with another man. None other than the sad bereaved dad from Daisy’s school and the persistent salesman that had pursued her these last twelve months. One and the same in a freakish coincidence that almost made me wonder if what was now happening between the three of us, or the two of them, was somehow written in the stars.

During the rest of that Sunday night, I was to discover new parts of myself that I never, ever knew existed.

Sure, before that night I’d talked to Kevin and Sue, and I had developed a kind of code – ‘being a bit of a Kevin’ – to describe any enjoyment of the idea or reality of Sue being with another man.

But during the rest of that night what was just an embryonic idea grew into a fully-fledged monster of frightening proportions.

And it was Alan - a man who I took to be a fairly two-dimensional, run-of-the-mill salesman and regular neighborhood dad - who provided the catalyst for this metamorphosis. As he showed me in the next few hours just how well he understood the human mind, both male and female.

Before he’d ascended the stairs with my wife happily snuggled in his arms, he’d sermonized me about how this first time they needed their privacy. And fool that I was I had taken him at face value. Had believed he was doing this mainly for Sue’s benefits, so that she wouldn’t have an audience and could relax and not worry about my feelings as she adjusted to having a man other than me as her lover. Only the second man she’d ever known sexually, only the second man she’d ever allowed that precious, intimate gift of entry into her body.

I’d even thought he was also doing it in part to spare my feelings. Like Sue, allowing me to adjust to things in private, having an easier and less public glidepath to the new normal.

But as soon as I heard the loud click of the lock on the guest suite where we’d put his things, my perceptions and understandings started rapidly shifting and the true intentions of the ‘privacy’ he’d suggested for Sue and me became clear.

At the time, I’d thought nothing of it, when during dinner he’d made an impromptu trip upstairs, saying he’d left his phone with his bags and that he needed to check for an urgent message he was expecting.
